Revelations of bizarre pet insurance claims from the likes of Moneysupermarket Pet Insurance and other industry watchdogs have proved that there is sometimes no way to stop pets from getting into scrapes and often the only way to get them out is an expensive trip to the vet.
A case in point is that of Mitzi Davis, the world’s first dog to undergo ankle amputation prosthesis after her foot was trampled by a horse. The German shepherd, from Dorchester in Dorset, lost all blood and nerve supply to the foot when it was trampled by a horse in October 2010. The operation involved the implanting of a titanium foot to the bone below her joint and, remarkably, she was then able to walk normally. The procedure cost Mitzi’s pet insurers in excess of £5,000.
Sometimes animals can get into accidents through their own sheer carelessness. This was the case when Belgian sheepdog Rider was chasing a squirrel through Joyce Biethan’s backyard and collided with a wheelbarrow, leaving him with a broken scapula, a broken rib and a punctured lung. Remarkably, after a visit to the vets, Rider did not require surgery and made a full recovery. Biethan told ABCnews: “He’s a kind of all-or-nothing dog and he went into ‘all’. He chased after that squirrel with total disregard of what might be in front of him.”
It is by no means just dogs who have their owners scouring moneysupermarket for the best pet insurance deals. Cats like Scooter, a Siamese belonging to US resident Margaret Stedt. Scooter was taken to the vets following what Stedt assumed were seizures but examination revealed that the problem was a needle poking through her throat and making contact with her brain. The curious kitty had apparently swallowed the needle after finding it amongst some sewing equipment.
Remarkably, Scooter was saved, thanks to a procedure involving anaesthetic. Stedt told ABCnews: “Another centimetre and she would have died. I think we’re very fortunate that they caught it when they did.”
Fortunately, these animals were saved by skilled vets and the financial preparations made by their owners to care for them when the unexpected happened. If your pet has got a sense of adventure and a habit of getting into mischief – and plenty of pets certainly do! – then it’s a great idea to have pet insurance for your animal just in case.

The Bichon Frise is a small dog that weighs approximately 5 – 10 kg and stands 23 – 30 cm  at the withers, but slightly larger dogs are not uncommon.
