If you are considering keeping a hamster as a pet then it is important for you to learn how to pick, tame, and handle one. Although hamsters can prove to be great pets but everyone knows that they have a bad reputation because of their biting habit. However, by knowing how to handle your new pet in the right manner, you can highly reduce the chances of getting bit or save others from getting bit as well. Besides everything, why do hamsters actually bite? Generally, hamsters are not categorized as being aggressive. They only bite when they are feeling stressed or frightened; this is just their way of expressing these two feelings. Therefore it is important that you handle your hamster kindly and gently so he never bites. Also, hamsters tend to bite when they are in a noisy house or are getting disturbed every now and then.

Although taming a hamster requires a lot of patience but trust me; the time you put in will be worth it. First of all, give your hamster some time so it can adjust to the new home and new surroundings. When you see that the hamster is getting used to and staying calm in the new home; you should then stay around the cage for long. You need to talk to your hamster in a soft voice from outside the cage so it can get familiar with your voice.

Once you notice that your new pet has gotten used to you being around the cage and stays calm at all times with you being there; start hand feeding it a few of its favorite things. Sunflower seeds and dried fruits would be a couple of good choices at this point. If you see that the hamster is eating from your hand; it is time that you try and pick it up as well. Remember to stay calm and not rush since the hamster will get frighten when you will try to force it to come in your hand.

Doing this might also put you at a risk of getting bitten therefore show some patience and instead of pushing the hamster on to your hand just wait until it crawls in your hand by itself. This might take more than a month but be patient otherwise all the efforts that you have put in might just go for a waste if the hamster freaks out and bites you.

Not only does it let you spend some quality time with your pet, but it should also make them feel good – therapeutic for you both. As with humans, all pets feel better after a little pampering. While you don’t have to send your pet to a spa for nice day of pampering, there are plenty of things you can do at or close to home to relax your pet and keep them healthy and at the peak of fitness. From grooming to the use of pet meds to maintain health, regular attention is the key.

Taking Care Of Your Pet

Most pets love to lounge around and sleep. What better way to care for them than with the essential comfortable bed. Place this in a warm and draft free spot in the home. You can choose a bed with memory foam for the ultimate in comfort. If your pet has the occasional toilet accident, consider a bed covered in waterproof fabric.

To help a pet relax you can give them a massage. You can either do this yourself or take them to a professional.

For the active pet, ensure you make time for regular exercise. Daily walks with the dog, particularly when the weather is nice, will give you great times together. For days spent indoors, find high quality pet toys that will last for hours of fun. For cats, a kitty condo is perfect for safe, indoor playtime.

Washing And Grooming

While washing may not be fun for some pets, other pets, especially dogs, often love taking baths. At the very least, take the time to regularly groom your pet. Whether you use a wet shampoo or a dry shampoo, it is possible to wash the animal at home. If you wish, you can avoid any potential mess by taking them to a professional groomer. It is important to find out as much as possible about your breed of dog or cat to know what types of grooming are required, such as cleaning around the eyes or a daily brushing for longhaired pets.

A typical washing and grooming session should include a bath with specially formulated pet shampoo to make the animal’s skin soft and their coat shiny. Follow up with a blow dryer set on low and brush them until they are relaxed, and they’re looking at their best.

Healthy Treats

If your pet isn’t confident about grooming, consider giving them a healthy treat after each session as a reward for being good. They’ll see the experience as something that is fun instead of a punishment. Many pet treats are available, but not all of them are good for your pet. Some helpful treats are actually in the form of pet meds. They are formulated with vitamins and medications to help treat common problems such as joint pain or hairballs.

If pet meds aren’t necessary, consider baking some healthy treats at home. Many recipes are available to suit all pets and can be found online or in books in the pet stores. You can also buy treats at many local bakeries and pet stores. Natural products are always the best choice to feed to or to apply to your pet. They will keep your pet healthier and most pets will always choose the healthy treat over the processed one.
