A Belgian team named Life On White and led by Eric Isselée has taken “nearly 10,000 images of around 480 different animal species in an attempt to create the largest collection of animals photographed in front of a white background by a single photographer.” You can purchase those pics online; parts of the benefits go to organization that deal with the protection of animals.

The cat , also known as the domestic cat or housecat to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small furry domesticated carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere on Earth. Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As nocturnal predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive. This is because cats’ usual prey (particularly rodents such as mice) make high frequency noises, so cats’ hearing has evolved to pinpoint these faint high-pitched sounds. Cats rely more on smell than taste, and have a vastly better sense of smell than humans.

One veterinary professor suggests that water damages the ability of a cat’s fur to insulate the animal against cold. This would explain why cold-weather cats don’t like water — it only makes them colder. But hot-weather cats don’t have this problem.

The cheetah is the world’s fastest land mammal. It can run at speeds of up to 70 miles an hour (113 kilometers an hour). Cheetahs do not roar, as the other big cats do. Instead, they purr. In one stride, a cheetah can cover 23 to 26 feet (7 to 8 meters).

An adult lion’s roar can be heard up to five miles (eight kilometers) away. In the wild, lions live for an average of 12 years and up to 16 years. They live up to 25 years in captivity. Lions are the only cats that live in groups, called prides. Every female within the pride is usually related. Unlike other cats, lions have a tuft of hair at the end of their tails.

Long, muscular hind legs enable snow leopards to leap seven times their own body length in a single bound.

A tiger’s stripes are like fingerprints—no two animals have the same pattern. Tigers are excellent swimmers and do not avoid water. Tigers have been hunted for their skin, bones, and other body parts, used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The strongest climber among the big cats, a leopard can carry prey twice its weight up a tree. The leopard is the most widespread of all big cats.

The Amur leopard is one of the most endangered animals in the world. A female Amur leopard gives birth to one to four cubs in each litter.

The name “jaguar” comes from a Native American word meaning “he who kills with one leap.” Fossil records from two million years ago show evidence of jaguars.

The Persian is a longhaired cat characterized by its round face and shortened muzzle. One of the oldest cat breeds, it takes its name from its place of origin: Persia (Iran). Recognized by the cat fancy since the late 19th century, it was developed first by the English, and then mainly by American breeders after the Second World War. In Britain, it is called the Longhair or Persian Longhair.

The selective breeding carried out by breeders has allowed the development of a wide variety of coat colors, but has also led to the creation of increasingly flat-faced Persians. Favored by fanciers, this head structure can bring with it a number of health problems. Like the case with the Siamese breed, there have been efforts by some breeders to develop the older type of cat with a more pronounced muzzle, which is more popular with the general public. The hereditary polycystic kidney disease is prevalent in the breed, affecting almost half the population in some countries.

A show-quality Persian has an extremely long and thick coat, short legs, a wide head with the ears set far apart, large eyes, and an extremely shortened muzzle. The breed was originally established with a short muzzle, but over time, this characteristic has become extremely exaggerated, particularly in North America. Persian cats can have any color or markings including pointed, golden, tortoiseshell, blue, and tabby.The Persian is generally described as a quiet cat.
